Energy concepts explained in an easy-to-understand way

Contract, consumption, and billing use different units of measurement. This glossary defines the most important terms. Detailed articles and calculators can be found in the OPTUM Journal.

Advance payment

An installment payment is an advance payment towards a later bill. It should be appropriate for the expected consumption and the price basis. A low installment payment does not necessarily indicate a favorable annual price.

Renewable energy

These include solar and wind energy, hydropower, biomass, and geothermal energy. Availability and generation profiles vary. When procuring electricity, guarantees of origin and contract terms are crucial; general statements about historical economic viability are not a valid basis for comparing current offers.

Base price

The base price is a fixed amount for the agreed period. This is distinct from the quantity-dependent energy price. Certain contracts also include a demand charge. Price components compared.

Combined heat and power

Combined heat and power (CHP) generates electricity and usable heat in a single process. The overall efficiency depends, among other things, on how the heat can be utilized. A general efficiency rating does not apply to every system.

Report changes in consumption

New equipment, changed operating hours, or vacancies can affect volume forecasts and advance payments. Review the reporting and volume rules in your contract and coordinate any significant changes with your responsible contractual partner.

Off-peak and dual-tariff arrangement

An HT/NT (peak/off-peak) tariff distinguishes between contractually defined periods. Times, metering, and availability depend on the specific tariff. There is no general off-peak electricity period that applies to all customers.

Electricity labeling

The electricity label provides information about the origin and composition of the electricity offered, as well as related environmental information. Please check the specified reference period and the specific product. It does not replace actual consumption measurement.

Stairwell and general electricity

This includes shared electrical appliances in a building. Energy supply and internal cost allocation are separate tasks. Clear allocation of meters, contracts, and usage data supports the management.

Relocation and change of location

Report planned changes early and document the meter readings at handover. Contract duration, termination, and possible start of supply must be checked based on the specific contract. Switching electricity providers when moving.

Meter reading

Meter readings can be recorded differently depending on the metering method. Note the date, meter number, and reading. The difference between two matching readings indicates the amount consumed; for gas, this is followed by the conversion from m³ to kWh.

KNOWLEDGE FOR PRACTICE

Applying the concepts practically

Calculate the consumption of individual devices using the electricity cost calculator. The commercial electricity guide explains how the basic charge and the usage charge differ in procurement.
